My Summer Lair Chapter #143: Have You Heard The Legend Of Camp Cold Brook?

>

I opened this interview by asking director slash horror fan Andy Palmer about Camp Crystal Lake versus Camp Cold Brook. When it comes to horror “camp” has more than 1 meaning, right?

In Camp Cold Brook there is camp but not in the traditional comedy sense: moments where Chad Michael Murray’s mailing address is 742 Evergreen Terrace (lol!) and a handful of sweet Joe Dante Easter eggs. And of course there’s plenty of horror my favourite moment (Andy and I talked about in this interview) is the swing set scene.

So what is going on at Camp Cold Brook? “A paranormal team sets to check out an abandoned summer camp where a mass murder had taken place decades previous.”

Oh…what’s the worst that can happen?

In hindsight over the course of this conversation I wish I’d emphasized the parallels between indie horror filmmaking and the paranormal TV investigators. It’s a compelling metaphor. Both operate with a dogged hustle: what Andy is attempting to achieve…to get on film is no different than a paranormal TV crew. Hollywood and the movie industry is dark and cold and it is difficult to survive just like every horror movie there are graphic casualties and disturbing urban legends. (Even surviving to Sun up is not always a good thing: most of these movies and tv shows are typically shot at night! Sun up means the shooting day is done.) There’s more to the metaphor but let’s leave it here; next time…I suspect Andy will be a return guest. So, I will hopefully remember to bring this up.

I want to thank Stephanie Cole for setting this interview up. Camp Cold Brook played in select cinemas and is now on VOD.
