My Summer Lair Chapter #96: When Was The Last Time You Saw Superman?
I co-hosted a comic book podcast Back Issue Bloodbath and my former co-host Andrew gets into the holiday spirit…while I? I just get into spirits period until Christmas (and winter!) is over.
However one of the amazing holiday traditions I do enjoy is Hollywood Suite‘s FREE nationwide preview! It runs every December into the first couple of days of January. Just the window of time where I rarely leave my warm house.
Hollywood Suite is a collection of movie channels: one channel is wholly dedicated to the 70s, another to the 80s, 90s, and finally 2000s. All uncut and no edits: swears and sex and satire. All the movies are also On Demand so basically, it’s like having another Netflix…for free! So yeah every December: check this out…it’s free. I mentioned it’s free yeah?
Annnd! On December 15, 2018 they’ll broadcast a special edition of Superman (the good one from 1978) which is celebrating its 40th anniversary followed by Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut!
Superman: The Movie premiered on December 10, 1978 staring Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent / Superman, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor and of course Marlon Brando as Jor-El: Superman’s biological father on Krypton.
The studio decided to film Superman and its sequel Superman II simultaneously; which was wild and ambitious. Unfortunately tensions arose between director Richard Donner and the producers. Eventually a decision was made to stop filming the sequel, of which 75 percent had already been completed and focus on finishing the first film. Which of course was a smash hit. Richard Donner was credited as the director for the first movie, while Richard Lester’s name shows up in the credits for the sequel.
Eventually the second movie was restored as intended hence: Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut! Check that out on Hollywood suite.
And then enjoy a whole pile of Hitchcock thrillers, Edward Scissorhands (Wolverine for civilians) and Austin Powers!! I’m out…phone is off the hook!
