My Summer Lair Chapter #9: How Is The Internet The Answer?
You know when you see a movie trailer and think: “Man that looks funny, I so gotta see that!” and you put on pants and go and…it’s not funny: it’s cancer serious or the movie is not what you expected. The trailer let you down…it lied to you.
That let down feeling is Andrew Keen’s The Internet Is Not The Answer premise: the internet heralded as this bastion of freedom and creativity and connection and man we believed this trailer and yet…it’s not entirely true is it?
I’d read Andrew Keen’s The Cult of the Amateur few years back and I dug it…even the ideas I didn’t agree with. Then in January 2015 he released The Internet Is Not The Answer and it was the same story: I wanted to fist bump him for the articulating my internet experiences all while there’s a bunch of stuff I didn’t know what to do with so I let those concepts tumble in my mind…processing them slowly and of course a pile of ideas I didn’t agree with.
This interview was a challenge: Andrew was in Toronto for Idea City so his time was limited but I had so much I wanted to get into.
Reed Richards…Mr. Fantastic said this about Iron Man (Tony Stark) in a recent Avengers issue: “Tony is not as simple as us. He’s a future man trapped in the now. A prisoner raging against the slow crawl of human evolution.” I was curious to see if that description applied to Andrew as well…after our time together I know it clearly does not.
