344 | Richard Young (Champions of Magic)

My Summer Lair Chapter #344: Who Are The Champions Of Magic?

Champions of Magic Holiday Spectacular is touring North America this month; the magic show comes to Toronto on December 27 – January 4 at the St Lawrence Centre (Bluma Appel Theatre. Super intimate location for an outstanding magic show. I saw Champions of Magic there in December 2018.)

This incarnation of the show’s cast features Liberty Larsen, Fernando Velasco and a magical duo Young & Strange.

Champions of Magic is an interactive magic performance that blends humor with brand new jaw-dropping magic. We’re talking fire and jaws of death and straitjackets…I dig that kind of magic as much as close-up card trick magic.

A teaser tailer for their recent show in Detroit; right before they come to Toronto:

Indeed, Champions of Magic is worth pants. That’s the highest Yelp review I can give it.

Based in the UK, Richard is a passionate David Copperfield fan. So much so he recently released an audio documentary Copperfield in the UK – 30 Years on as part of The Magicians’ Podcast Network.

Of course, I asked Richard about David Copperfield. (I just saw David Copperfield live in Las Vegas, 2 years ago. It was stunning. Go!)

More than just David Copperfield, Richard and I gabbed about The Champions of Magic show and how the cast navigates ego. (This is after all show business.)

And I boldly asked him to ta-da reveal…an oh-oh! moment on stage when something went wrong. And indeed…there was an oh-oh moment shortly after a volunteer had his wristwatch shattered. Oh-oh for true.

As humans we all need moments of rest, connection and wonder…these are the essential ingredients for a meaningful life. And that’s what magic gives us. That’s why Champions of Magic is beneficial.

Especially this time of year when the holidays can be hectic.

Take this opportunity to wonderfully witness a dazzling spectacle and enjoy a miracle or two.

And may 2026 be a year loaded with blessings…make magic happen.
