My Summer Lair Chapter #35: Where Do The Stories You Want To Tell Come From?
This captivating interview with director/actor/writer/editor Ryan Kipp was recorded in Trigger Creative’s HQ which is in Greenpoint this spirited Brooklyn neighbourhood. Much like Ryan Greenpoint is a pileup of ideas and executions: you’ll see cafes next to industrial areas next to energetically branded apartment complexes. Ryan has a theatre background, decided to become an editor and is now a director.
(Actually more than drawing connections with Greenpoint on this trip to New York City I’d started reading Bruce Springsteen’s outstanding memoir Born to Run. It was startlingly to hear Ryan echo a lot of themes and ideas Bruce articulates in his book.
Listen to how Ryan talks about his alcoholic dad; how those experiences inform his work and shape his relationship with Noah, his new son and contrast that with this quote from Born to Run: “We honor our parents by carrying their best forward and laying the rest down. By fighting and taming the demons that laid them low and now reside in us.” Crazy.)
I met Ryan through Cara Yeates who a) has visited My Summer Lair and 2) you can hear her in the background of this interview. Ryan and Cara are skilled individuals you want to keep an eye out for…they are going places. I highly recommend you go where they go.
My conversation with Ryan was sparked because of his recent short Cabin.
That horror short is making it’s debut at the Big Apple Film Festival on November 2, 2016.
If Cabin doesn’t appear at a film festival near you then have no fear his other fantastic project is the feature film The 3 Metamorphoses which’ll be out in 2017.
