My Summer Lair Chapter #92: Remember when Canadians Used To Be Nice?
Canada has given the world yet another polarizing Canadian…Jordan Peterson is now in the pantheon with Nickelback, Justin Bieber, Doug Ford, even William Shatner is getting in trouble these days…honestly do you remember when Canadians used to be nice (as in dull)?!
Shut Him Down: The Rise of Jordan Peterson is “a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the political correctness controversy sparked by psychology professor Jordan Peterson and his meteoric rise to global fame.”
The documentary is fascinating. I don’t agree in “Shut Him Down!” premise…I’ll never advocate for censorship or oppression of any kind; not matter how widely accepted or popular that ugly awful dogma becomes. While highly ineffective there’s no guarantee the same people stifling Jordan won’t turn on me or others…censorship is a frightening slippery slope.
Now logically that doesn’t mean I agree with Jordan Peterson…it just means that I want to have the option to hear what he has to say. I want to decide for myself…away from the hysterics and emotions of the crowd what he is saying.
I want him to have the freedom to say what he wants to say…and in turn I want to have the freedom to hear it and make my own decision. I want those same valuable freedoms for you as well…for all of us.
I don’t believe in all or nothing…I believe in rational nuance. Everybody…every single human being says dumb things, wrong things, bright things, has alternative perspectives, speaks without doing any research and most importantly…has the ability to listen.
Shut Him Down premiered on CBC Docs POV on Friday November 2nd at 9pm and is now streaming in Canada at cbc.ca/watch. A longer theatrical version is also available, social media links are below.
