My Summer Lair Chapter #17: How Fresh Is Scarborough?
Wow. Gavin Stephens is the first (and fellow) Scarborough Son to properly articulate a distinct definition of that unique Scarborough Voice. Ah-mazing.
In high school that Scarborough Voice shaped my friendships, developed projects that became short films and writing…that Voice transcends established and common ghetto nomenclature.
That Scarborough Voice informs (present tense) how we walk, how we talk, think…it baptizes our art; it is our art: that Voice is who we are. You can hear that Voice in our work…if you’re lucky you can smell it.
The Weeknd, Mike Myers, David Furnish, Gerry Dee, Melyssa Ford, Barenaked Ladies, Gavin and myself are from Scarborough. And Gavin eloquently sums up all that culture and geography into a bold infectious statement. It was radio but trust me: I fist pumped.
A powerful nerd with a sweet Swartzwelderian sarcasm Gavin has been doing this stand up comedy gig for years. Toronto was a different city back then…our comedy, our comics were not the same. And those are the stories I dig: comics and comic books.
This is the story of 2 brothers getting together in My Summer Lair...
