#SetTheVCR Review – Creepshow – S01E02

As you may have heard or seen Creepshow ― originally a 1982 horror-comedy anthology film directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King ― has been adapted into a 2019 horror anthology television series which began airing on Shudder on September 26. (And can now be seen on AMC starting May 4, 2020.) As we move into October and slowly zombie shuffle to Halloween Creepshow continues to offer up EC Comics like tales that suit the season.

Alright so let’s get into this: Creepshow’s second episode begins with Bad Wolf Down. This satisfying vignette set during World War II offers Nazis, American soldiers including one played by Kid Cudi, a full moon oh and…a werewolf. Well, one werewolf to start then several more. Oh Yes!

I haven’t seen a human to werewolf transformation in like how long… since MJ’s Thriller? As one of the American soldiers wisely summaries: “War changes a man.” Indeed.

This tale is fun! I mean it’s werewolves… that’s the pitch! What more could you want from Creepshow? Bad Wolf Down is written and directed by Rob Schrab which continues this show’s excellent nerd track record.

If you don’t know: Rob Schrab is the comic book creator of Scud: The Disposable Assassin (turns out Image puts out more than Saga!), works with Dan Harmon on Rick and Morty and directed some episodes of Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000 reboot. So yeah that guy is giving us werewolves taking on Nazis.

Enjoy! I did.

The second vignette is The Finger a gruesome play on words: yes the finger you’re thinking off… the one we’ve all used in traffic (coupled with some choice words about the terrible driver’s mother) and the puzzling finger Clark (played by DJ Qualls) randomly finds one dark evening.

Just what is it? Was the first question, Clark asked as he took the odd finger home where it began to… grow? Another finger then slowly an arm until eventually, a whole creature has grown out of that finger.

Which is precisely when the murdering begins.

I mean we all have people who annoy us, people who warrant a finger flip: what if this hideous creature grown from that finger could eliminate those irritating people? Now is that something you’d be interested in? Especially if you dig the mixture of horror-comedy like Saturday the 14th you will enjoy The Finger. Excellent puppeteering as well: this isn’t a CGI creature.

Director and Creepshow showrunner Greg Nicotero learned some of his “repulsive” horror make-up and special effects from George A. Romero and Tom Savini which is like learning basketball from Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. The Finger shows off his bloody impressive skills and that’s going to be an odd legacy to Creepshow: it’ll allow others to learn this nasty craft and allow for some unique experiments. Horror tv shows and movies will get better and more fun.

So there you go: the second episode of Creepshow offers you a double Creature Feature. Werewolves you know, keep the silver handy and the other creature is well, you’ll see on Shudder. As always #SetTheVCR!
