My Summer Lair Chapter #296: Is Kenny The Soul Of This Nameless Town Where Horrible Things Happen?
After much contemplation…I’ve concluded:
From is Lost meets The Walking Dead…only set in an escape room.
From’s third season started on September 22, 2024. And it’ll conclude on November 24, 2024.
According to the TV Guide: “The series unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town in middle America that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest – including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down.”
Fresh! I’m a (blood) sucker for these types of trapped sci-fi horror mysteries.
On June 15, 2023 Stephen King tweeted:
“If you’re a horror fan and not watching From, you should get with it. Scary shit.”
You know…I wonder about that…From has distinct Stephen King elements. I asked actor Ricky He who has played Kenny Liu on From for all 3 seasons. More so in Season 1…there’s eerie small town Stephen King vibes.
Ricky nodded and said: “Yeah, Stephen King’s a fan of the show. He’s tweeted about it. And I’ve since read The Long Walk, which I which I really enjoy.”
Woah, that’s a deep cut: The Long Walk. That rarely comes up in King conversations.
Back to Ricky who plays Kenny. When Season 1 opened Kenny is Boyd’s deputy and right-hand man. Kenny lives with his aging parents in this horrific township.
Ricky takes me through Kenny’s heartbreaking journey over the 3 seasons he’s been trapped in the nightmarish town. I point out to Ricky that Kenny’s fortunate in that he’s trapped in the town with his parents but also with his culture.
That’s a rare experience considering what everyone else has to endure.
And though Kenny started off as Boyd’s deputy their relationship is evolving…Ricky drops a fantastic comic book analogy that neatly sums it all up. Oh, man I wish we did this interview in person so I could give him a high five. So cool.
In this charming My Summer Lair conversation yes there are Season 3 spoilers. Ricky and I unpack a handful of key moments. (Although maybe they don’t mean anything…)
What is happening in From? 2 and half seasons later that question hasn’t been resolved.
