354 | Keith O’Brien (Heartland: The Miracle of Larry Bird)

Posted on March 10, 2026June 23, 2026 By Sammy Younan No Comments on 354 | Keith O’Brien (Heartland: The Miracle of Larry Bird)

My Summer Lair Chapter #354: Do You Know Larry Bird’s Origin Story As Well As You Know Superman’s?

I didn’t appreciate Larry Bird in real time.

Michael Jordan came into the league in 1984 and by then the Celtics were fading. Bird only had brief moments on the Dream Team Olympic run though I did not question his inclusion. However, as a quick tangent…the director of HBO’s We Beat the Dream Team was a My Summer Lair guest. Super fun documentary. And that Dream Team documentary includes Chris Webber and other players still in college at the time talking about how savage Larry Bird was trash talking em. I dig it.

So Keith O’Brien’s biography Heartland: A Forgotten Place, An Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird was crucial as I have come over the years to appreciate Larry Bird. And yet I don’t know his story. He is known as the Hick from French Lick and what is French Lick? I’ve spent more time with Batman in Gotham City which isn’t real than in rural Indiana.

And what’s impressive about Keith’s Larry Bird bio is he starts the story at the beginning: Once Upon a Time there was an Indiana basketball player; Larry Bird who dropped outta Indiana University and Bobby Knight’s college program. And while Keitth is smoothly telling that story he is also transforming the collective narrative.

Keith O’Brien’s book Heartland is the chiropractor for the twisted narrative and getting Larry Bird’s story all into proper and valid alignment.

As Keith reveals in this MSL conversation when I asked him about writing these books about Larry Bird and before that… Pete Rose (Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose) he admitted he writes them as a historian and as a journalist. As fans we tend to share a narrative that isn’t rooted in reality. It’s why I find nostalgia so terrifying because that rose covered lens dilutes memories and eliminates nuance.

Keith concludes: “I’m looking to understand these people that meant so much to us.” And with Heartland: A Forgotten Place, An Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird, he succeeds.

Keith’s Heartland book isn’t really about jump shots. It’s about the Wonder Years effect of revisiting the places that shaped us, identity, mythology, and what happens when a kid from French Lick becomes bigger than the town he came from.

A former staff writer for the Boston Globe, Keith is now a New York Times bestselling author whose books combine relentless reporting and  punchy prose. Keith often shares incredible true stories of ordinary people facing extraordinary adversity.

So yeah, this isn’t a Larry Bird Celtics episode.

Rather this is how Larry Bird became Larry Bird. And what that meant for a country eager to turn him into a symbol, a saviour…a Great White Hope.

I mentioned Keith’s previous book on Pete Rose…and Pete Rose was also another Great White Hope. We talk about that strange American burden.

We talk about the evolution of NCAA basketball, from the late-’70s world Bird inhabited to today’s NIL era, which injects Madness into basketball all year round not just March.

And just as the towns of Indiana helped shape Larry Bird, we explore Keith’s Midwestern roots—including his passion for Skyline Chili.

I’ve only been to Cincinnati once….kinda wanna try that again.

And while that part of the conversation with Keith left me hungry it was dope to talk to him about Larry Bird or as he frames it in the subtitle for Heartland: The Miracle of Larry Bird.
