My Summer Lair Chapter #55: Can I Call DMC D?
Ultimately this is a conversation about voice. An artist’s task is to discover and identify their voice…you’d be mistaken if you believed that what to say is the issue or should be the focus.
What to say is easy once you have your voice in place.
DMC is an example of that…from his early days as Run DMC to now dealing with his alcoholism, discovering he is adopted…the topics he speaks about have changed; in some cases birthing new and unexpected ministries. And of course bringing him back to comic books. Comic books are very much about the voice…a Spider-Man quip is just as iconic as Hulk’s “puny humans” or Batman’s grunts (you try talking to him when he’s at the Batcomputer!).
Even when we switch topics and I ask him if the Knicks will ever get it together he begins talking like a Professional Basketball Player. It’s funny and totally rings true.
As a man who has struggled; maybe still struggling DMC remains undaunted and inspired. You can hear his voice on his upcoming 2018 album DMC: Dynamic Music Collaborations and currently of course in his comic books: Darryl Makes Comics.
The photo below is myself and DMC: he felt my b-boy stance needed work. Hah! I feel like I let Scarborough down! Oh and you can see the red adidas jacket I’m wearing (highly recommend adidas jackets for interviews so comfortable and they keep you warm and fresh…).
