My Summer Lair Chapter #239: Ready To Do The Deepfake Serenade?
This is a captivating conversation between myself and Chris Banks, a poet-based in Kitchener, Ontario.
Like most interviews, it was sparked by his latest work; his sixth poetry collection called Deepfake Serenade.
In Deepfake Serenade he writes on page 12: “a poem persists whether anyone reads it or not.” That neatly explains why I believe poetry is a superpower. Concrete hard will is a superpower.
As you can instantly gleam from the title Deepfake Serenade is about hiding behind avatars. A luxury this modern life affords us. Now you can be anybody(s) you want to be; you can be trendy…we’re seeing a lot of that lately.
Think of it this way: Is Superman the real person and Clark Kent is the mask or is it the reverse? Clark Kent is the authentic individual and Superman is the mask? Which one is the secret identity?
When he talks to himself…does he think himself as Bruce Wayne or as Batman? What does the small talk voice in his head say? Interesting.
We discuss his work…his poetry through a musical lens: so we reference Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joe Strummer/The Clash, Sex Pistols…Violent Femmes. This is an engaging conversation that should be accompanied by a Spotify playlist.
I also recommend Chris’ 2019 collection Midlife Action Figure.
