For the record while Nickelback and Bieber Fever are Canadian exports, it was Americans who made them big. Just saying we all played a part in that sad tale. And yet there’s so much good music coming out of Canada. I’ll be in the US Grandpa Simpson rambling about some band that’s HUGE in Canada and earn blank looks. Who or what are you talking about? So that’s the purpose behind this CanCon Column every Tuesday at 9am…to provide illumination of Canadian music: retro, past and present/future. Any suggestions email or use comments below.

One of music’s attractive qualities is diversity. We all need spiritual songs, mixtape songs, fight the power songs and yes, grooving party jams. (We also need Weird Al parody songs too, those frikken rock!)
Bass Is Base is one of Canada’s grooviest bands. Lounge, soul, funk, fun all tossed into a blender you just have to hit play.
The music is there but the swagger, the cool…not quite. Many moons ago my friend Jai went to one of their shows. At one point they directed the crowd to sing along with Tribe’s freshtastic Can I Kick It?
Bass were listing all these bands…can the Tribe kick it? The audience hollered: “yes they can!” Can Pharcyde kick it? “Yes they can!” Finally they asked the $64, 000 Question: Can Bass Is Base kick it? The audience laughed: “No, no they can’t.” Ouch.
No matter, just dance your blues away.
Sounds Like:
Early Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, even some Black Eyed Peas
Fun Fact:
After the band broke up MC Mystic became a chef. He has a tv show on Food Network and everything. That’s not mystic that’s cosmic.
