#SetTheVCR: June 6-12, 2022

Posted on June 6, 2022June 8, 2022 By Sammy Younan No Comments on #SetTheVCR: June 6-12, 2022

Netflix Geeks Hustle for stand up-comedy: it’s that type of #SetTheVCR week.

Monday, June 06

Bill Burr Presents: Friends Who Kill (Anytime / Netflix)

A comedy showcase recorded at the recent Netflix Is A Joke Fest featuring stand-ups curated by Bill Burr.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: NETFLIX GEEKED WEEK (ANYTIME / ON NETFLIX SOCIALS)

Geeked Week 2022 is a free five-day virtual event celebrating Netflix’s genre series, films, and games that runs June 6-10 across all your favorite social media platforms, with tons of exclusive news, new trailers, celebrity appearances and so much more.
~~~
Geeked Week 2022 runs June 6-10! A sampling of what to expect from Netflix’s Nerdapalooza: teaser and trailer premieres, sneak peeks, surprise announcements, never-before-seen footage, cast interviews, script table reads, and much more covering more than 60 Netflix projects. None of it will be on the streamer itself; rather Geeked Week is hosted on all their social platforms including YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, Twitch and Facebook. June 6,7 and 9 start at 9am PT/12pm EST. June 8 at 4pm PT/7pm EST and June 10 at 10am PT/1pm EST. The geeky days break down like this June 6: Series, June 7: Film, June 8: Animation, June 9: Stranger Things and finally June 10 is Games. What TV shows or Netflix Movies are you looking forward to?
Tuesday, June 07
Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special (Anytime / Netflix)
In his final comedy special, Norm Macdonald ponders casinos, cannibalism, living wills and why you have to be ready for whatever life throws your way.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: THAT’S MY TIME WITH DAVID LETTERMAN: PART 1 (ANYTIME / NETFLIX)
David Letterman invites some of the hottest up-and-coming stand-up stars to perform a set and sit down for a chat.
~~~

David Letterman’s next guest on Netflix does need an introduction. Recorded live during the Netflix Is a Joke festival these short episodes will be Lunchables style snacks of ambient TV. 5 minute sets from up-and-coming comics like Sam Morril and Naomi Ekperigin followed by a conversation with Letterman. This 6 episode season is broken into 2 parts: Part 1 is today; Part 2 is Sunday.

Wednesday, June 08

Ms. Marvel: Season 1 (Anytime / Disney+)

Kamala Khan is a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City, who feels like she doesn’t fit—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life’s better with super powers, right?
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: HUSTLE (ANYTIME / NETFLIX)

When a down-on-his-luck basketball scout finds a potential superstar in Spain, he sets out to prove they both have what it takes to make it in the NBA.
~~~
Adam Sandler’s dramatic offerings are as unique as his comedic characters. This time his dramatic character is Stanley Sugarman; he works for the Philadelphia 76ers as scout. And Stanley has struck gold; having scouted an unknown basketball talent…in Spain. The question now is…can both of them make it to the NBA? The cast features numerous past and current NBA stars including Kenny Smith, Trae Young, Anthony Edwards and Seth Curry, among others. Coming from The Sandman this is a love letter to basketball; like Almost Famous was Cameron Crowe’s love letter to rock n roll music. It should be…a slam dunk.
Thursday, June 09
Yellowjackets: Season 1 (Anytime / Paramount+)
Episodes 1 & 2 of the Showtime series comes to Paramount+. The saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN: LIMITED SERIES (ANYTIME / HULU & DISNEY+ CANADA)
The 7 episode limited series inspired by the true crime bestseller by Jon Krakauer, follows the events that led to the 1984 murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in a suburb in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah.
~~~

This has now been added to Disney+ Canada! (It was added to Hulu on April 28.) Andrew Garfield is on the case trying to solve the 1984 murder of Daisy Edgar-Jones in Salt Lake Valley, Utah. Playing a devout Mormon Garfield’s detective does everything…by The Book of Mormon! You’ll recognize a lot of faces in front of the camera and know a number of names behind the camera. Based on the trailer I expect the expected buried truths will be unearthed prompting Garfield to have a classic Matt Murdock crisis of faith. Still this True Detective persists because he wants to be in on the secret.

Friday, June 10

For All Mankind: Season 3 (Anytime / Apple TV+)

Imagine a world where the global space race never ended. This thrilling “what if” take on history from Ronald D. Moore spotlights the high-stakes lives of NASA astronauts and their families.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: DIRTY DADDY: THE BOB SAGET TRIBUTE
(ANYTIME / NETFLIX)

A celebration of Bob’s life in comedy with his friends and family recorded at the recent Netflix Is A Joke Fest.
~~~
We lost Bob Saget on January 9, 2022. At the time his sudden death was shocking. As was the discovery…well for some those who did not know that Saget was more than just the Full House Guy…he was a stand up comic who often worked blue. Today Netflix streams a special honoring Bob Saget’s legacy. Filmed during its Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival it was hosted at West Hollywood’s famous comedy club, The Comedy Store. Where else? It’ll be a “full house” of comics and celebrities from John Stamos to Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Jeff Ross to musician John Mayer and many more stars. All paying tribute to Bob and allowing us the audience and his comedy fans to say good-bye.
Saturday, June 11
Amy Schumer’s Parental Advisory (Anytime / Netflix)
A showcase featuring stand-ups curated by Schumer recorded at the recent Netflix Is A Joke Fest.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: NO TIME TO DIE (ANYTIME / PRIME VIDEO)
A mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading James Bond (Daniel Craig) onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.
~~~

The twenty-fifth movie in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions, starring Daniel Craig in his fifth and final portrayal of British MI6 agent, James Bond. I’ve a number of issues with this Bond movie; which had the dubious honour of being one of the first movies postponed due to the pandemic: initially scheduled for release in April 2020 by early March it was clear that was no longer possible. The subsequent shuffle of opening dates, the lockdowns where cinemas were open but mostly closed all made it difficult for audiences to connect with this movie. It’s now on Prime Video For Your Eyes Only.

Sunday, June 12

Barry: Season 3, Episode 8 Season Finale (Anytime / HBO Max)

Entitled starting now and directed by Bill Hader; this concludes Season 3 but not Barry. Thankfully Barry’s story and his desperate attempted to reconcile his violent nature will continue: In May 2022 the HBO series was renewed for a fourth season.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: THAT’S MY TIME WITH DAVID LETTERMAN: PART 2 (ANYTIME / NETFLIX)

David Letterman invites some of the hottest up-and-coming stand-up stars to perform a set and sit down for a chat.
~~~
The second half of Letterman’s “set.” As I said above…David Letterman’s next guest on Netflix does need an introduction. Recorded live during the Netflix Is a Joke festival these short episodes will be Lunchables style snacks of ambient TV. 5 minute sets from up-and-coming comics like Sam Morril and Naomi Ekperigin followed by a conversation with Letterman. This 6 episode season is broken into 2 parts: Part 2 is today; Part 2 was Tuesday. (Obviously if you watch them out of order; you’ll be fine and be able to follow “the plot.”)
