#SetTheVCR: May 2-8, 2022

Posted on May 2, 2022May 23, 2022 By Sammy Younan No Comments on #SetTheVCR: May 2-8, 2022

From Star Wars to Star Trek I’m happy you’re Along For The Ride as we explore strange #SetTheVCR worlds! Don’t believe me? Just Ask Dr. Ruth.

Monday, May 2

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Director’s Cut) (Anytime / HBO Max)

A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten-year-old son John from a more advanced and powerful cyborg. The Director’s Cut is incredible and makes the movie that much better.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: THE ARSENIO HALL SHOW (ANYTIME / YOUTUBE)

Arsenio Hall is returning to his talk show roots with Arsenio! Live from Netflix Is a Joke Fest. For four nights only, Hall will host a show packed with interviews with celebrity guests, stand-up comedy and more.
~~~
So…on May 2nd welcome back the return of The Arsenio Hall Show (on the Netflix Is A Joke YouTube channel; not on the streamer.). Yes I’m telling you this in 2022. Netflix Is A Joke Fest is the first ever live Netflix comedy festival running from April 28 – May 8. (Netflix is a Joke Fest is an 11-day stand-up comedy festival and feature 130 comics with some of the biggest names making jokes these days. Its inaugural lineup includes Dave Chappelle, Seth Rogen, Dana Carvey, David Spade, Aziz Ansari, Bill Burr and Conan O’Brien. The L.A.-based event will take place across 25 venues. Whew!) And so comics performing at the festival will be Arsenio’s guests. Oh. Fresh. The Arsenio Hall Show runs from May 2nd to 5th on YouTube. Where the Dawg Pound at??
Tuesday, May 3
A Man Wanted (Anytime / Netflix Canada)
An Egyptian rom-com about a woman in her late thirties who desires to reproduce, publishes a Facebook ad requesting contributors and sperm donors plus the correct material conditions.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: ASK DR. RUTH (ANYTIME / CBC GEM)
Charting the incredible life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a Holocaust survivor who became America’s most famous sex therapist.
~~~

Ask Dr. Ruth is a 2019 documentary that traces her strange life. As a survivor of the Holocaust to the sexual revolution to her 80s popularity, Dr. Ruth has lived an extraordinary and utterly raunchy life. We could all be so fortunate. And as always with documentaries who knows…maybe you’ll learn something. The trick is not to be distracted; if you find yourself drifting “in and out” of this documentary; maybe take a 20 to 25 minute break before you got at it again.

Wednesday, May 4

Moon Knight: Limited Series Episode 6 *Season Finale* (Anytime  / Disney+)

Mild-mannered Steven Grant has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with a mercenary. Please Note: Marvel Studios: Assembled – The Making of Moon Knight will be on Disney+ on May 11.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: DISNEY GALLERY: THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT (ANYTIME / DISNEY+)

The behind-the-scenes story of the legendary bounty hunter’s return to Tatooine with filmmakers, cast, and crew.
~~~
Just like Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian before it; this is your classic behind-the-scenes, documentary-style look at how The Book of Boba Fett was made. Granted not the most spectacular way to celebrate Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you!) but think of it as an appetizer before Obi-Wan Kenobi debuts on May 25. (If this special is about as thrilling as pod race…you can also celebrate by enjoying the Star Wars collection on Disney+.)
Thursday, May 5
Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 10 *Season Finale* (Anytime  / Paramount+ & Crave)
Picard features Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The new series will follow this iconic character into the next chapter of his life.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS
(ANYTIME  / PARAMOUNT+ & CRAVE)
Based on when Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise; years before Captain Kirk boarded the Enterprise, this crew explores new worlds around the galaxy.
~~~

When Q closes a door to a universe like Picard, he opens a window to a universe like Strange New Worlds. Anson Mount plays Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn is Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. Together they’re off to “Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no Captain Kirk has gone before.”

Friday, May 6

The Wilds: Season 2 (Anytime / Prime Video)

Follow the harrowing ordeal of a group of teenage girls stranded on a deserted island, and they didn’t end up there by accident – they’ve secretly been recruited into an elaborate social experiment.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: THE PENTAVERATE: LIMITED SERIES
(ANYTIME / NETFLIX)

From the mind of Mike Myers comes a Netflix comedy series event about The Pentaverate [pen-tav-urr-uht].
~~~
About The Pentaverate: “What if a secret society of five men have been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347?” Also? What if Mike Myers took a throwaway line from So I Married an Axe Murderer and expanded it; writing a 6 episode Netflix TV show where he plays 8 mostly Canadian related characters like he’s a Nutty Professor? Forget Turning Red: how much Toronto do you recognize in his characters: Ken Scarborough, Anthony Lansdowne, Rex Smith, Bruce Baldwin and Shep Gordon. Like all classic Mike Myers comedy creations he creates a world that needs sarcastic saving so The Pentaverate may not be enough. Yeah baby! Mike Myers is back.
Saturday, May 7
Sheryl: Documentary (Anytime / Showtime & Crave)
The intimate story of song and sacrifice about musical icon Sheryl Crow.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: ALONG FOR THE RIDE (ANYTIME / NETFLIX)
The summer before college Auden meets the mysterious Eli, a fellow insomniac. While the seaside town of Colby sleeps, the two embark on a nightly quest to help Auden experience the fun, carefree teen life she never knew she wanted.
~~~

While I’m always up for a teen movie eh…I’m not feeling this…at all. Still let’s talk about it. I’m not sold on the girl or the boy I dunno who either of em are. There’s something off about this trailer…though I thankfully wouldn’t put it in Kissing Booth territory. No teen movie is as bad as Kissing Booths. But to reclaim fun and Summer all the things she never understood or felt she wanted is played out. Is there something else going on here that the trailer is hinting at? It’s a teen movie on Netflix. I’ll go Along For The Ride for at least the first 15 minutes.

Sunday, May 8

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty: Season 1 Episode 10 *Season Finale* (Anytime / HBO Max & Crhttps://www.crave.ca/en/tv-shows/winning-time-the-rise-of-the-lakers-dynastyave)

Winning Time is the fast-break new drama series that goes back in time to chronicle the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: RICH & SHAMELESS: PHARMA BRO VS. WU-TANG CLAN (11:30 P.M. / TNT)

Rich & Shameless is a seven-part series of premium films by TNT that tell the true stories of the successes, failures, thrills and miseries that accompany the kind of wealth that few people can ever understand.
~~~
This is the Twilight Zone story of Martin Shkreli a hedge-fund wunderkind who used his wealth to purchase a Wu-Tang album. Once Upon a Time in Shaolin is Wu-Tang Clan’s seventh studio album that most fans including myself have never fully heard. It was limited to a single copy, sold in 2015 to Martin Shkreli for $2 million, and is the most expensive work of music ever sold. In March 2018, following Shkreli’s conviction for securities fraud (spoiler alert??), a federal court seized assets belonging to him including yes the album!
