#SetTheVCR: March 1-7, 2020

Posted on March 1, 2020March 29, 2023 By Sammy Younan

This week is my Nerd Christmas with the return of Altered Carbon: Season 2. When is your Nerd Christmas? Lemme know after you’ve checked out the follow tv recommendations.

Sunday, March 1
Sammy Suggestion: The Simpsons (8 p.m. / Fox)
This episode of The Simpsons will be Marvelous! “Bart the Bad Guy” features voices from MCU producer Kevin Feige, the Russo brothers Avengers: Endgame directors and…yes and! Cobie Smulders. It’s a MCU spectacular.

Monday, March 2
Sammy Suggestion: Breeders: Season 1 (10 p.m. / FX)
I assume we’re not getting another season of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s Sherlock. Dracula seemed to do well for them, Benedict is acting all Strange in the MCU and Martin Freeman is in Breeders. If you dig Three Men and a Baby struggling to put the diaper on a peeing baby scenes you’ll dig this FX show on modern parenthood. The parenting game is afoot!

Tuesday, March 3
Taylor Tomlinson: Quarter-Life Crisis (Anytime / Netflix)

Sammy Suggestion: Super Tuesday (9 p.m. / All Channels)
Broadcast networks, local stations and cable-news outlets will offer live coverage of “Super Tuesday” primary elections in California and 13 other states around the country. Various times, channels

Today is Super Tuesday: the Super Bowl of American politics: what Americans reluctantly call a National Primary but really it’s a classic high noon gunfighter shoot out. (When the dust settles there will be a few casualties.) Most of the traditional channels (ABC, CNN etc.) will be airing punditry and what painfully passes for political analysis around 8pm. I don’t have time nor interest for any of that: it’s as awful as the 4 hour long pre-Super Bowl show. If you’re invested in US politics I suggest checking out Showtime’s The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth this Sunday night at 8pm. A fantastic and concise 30 minute recap of the American political week. (30 minutes! Thank you!) Sharp distinct analysis; key interviews and it’s short and sweet like a Marvel comics recap page.

Wednesday, March 4
Everybody’s Everything (Anytime / Netflix)

Sammy Suggestion: Ready Player One (Anytime / Netflix)
One of the better sci-fi movies from Steven Spielberg makes a Netflix appearance this month. I’m recommending it as if you saw it in the cinemas as I did you missed a lot. There’s a variety of characters, easter eggs and all kinds of pop culture shenanigans that require pausing and rewinding just to fully appreciate all that’s going on. Like that Freddy Krueger cameo…that made me laugh.

Thursday, March 5
Kevin Hart: What the Fit Season 3 (Anytime / YouTube)
Castlevania: Season 3 (Anytime / Netflix)

Sammy Suggestion: Devs: Season 1 (Anytime / Hulu)
“Devs follows the story of a young software engineer, Lily Chan, who investigates the secretive development division of her employer which she believes is behind her boyfriend’s murder.” Hmmm. This seems wonderfully creepy less Mr. Robot and more “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” 2001. Let’s give this a shot, shall we?

Friday, March 6
Sammy Suggestion: Amazing Stories (Anytime / Apple TV+)
I’m recommending this even though I know I’ll regret it. Peele’s Twilight Zone reboot replaced the Nightmare at 20,000 Feet gremlin with a…sentient podcast. Sigh: I know. Modernizing these old-timey shows rarely makes them better. And let’s be more honest. The original Amazing Stories rarely lived up to its name (if it’s been a few years go back and watch em…so painful. Most of them are awful. I double dare you to watch “Alamo Jobe” originally broadcast on October 20, 1985.). All this to say let’s give this a shot. (Bonus Aside: I’m wondering if anthology tv shows are slowly becoming popular as an antidote to short attention spans and a welcome break from season long complex plotting. Some tv is better than no tv, right?)

Apple’s programming has aimed for more general family friend fare so I’m not expecting much horror. Sigh. Let’s do this thing!

Saturday, March 7
Sammy Suggestion: Spenser Confidential (Anytime / Netflix)
Spenser Confidential is the 5th Marky Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg collaboration following Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day, and Mile 22. So that should give you an indication of what to expect. What sells me is Alan Arkin is in this and that dude is fantastic in everything. Though if this is bad it could truly be a “Confidential” guilty pleasure.
