#CouchWorthy: March 2025 TV Highlights

Posted on April 5, 2025November 25, 2025 By Sammy Younan No Comments on #CouchWorthy: March 2025 TV Highlights

Here are the hits and blockbusters we enjoyed in March 2025. Some TV highlights that are #CouchWorthy.

March Highlights

Bill Burr: Drop Dead Years (Anytime / Hulu & Disney+ Canada)

March was National Loud Mouth Month. We kicked off this month with Andrew Schulz: Life on Netflix. And now we get Bill Burr: Drop Dead Years on Hulu. (You can be a jive sucker and sit through Iliza Shlesinger: A Different Animal on Prime Video but why would you do that?) Burr’s special is part of Hulu’s Laughing Now stand up comedy push: 12 comedy specials in 2025 adding one new comic per month. I’ve enjoyed Roy Wood Jr.’s Lonely Flowers as part of that program. As for this special…well it’s Bill Burr. His witty rage is comforting by now.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: ANDREW SCHULZ: LIFE (ANYTIME / NETFLIX)

In this razor-sharp yet heartfelt special, Andrew Schulz unpacks the wildest moment of his life — becoming a father. Making a baby isn’t easy. In LIFE, Andrew Schulz’s most personal special yet, he takes us on a hilarious and humbling journey of trying to start a family. Schulz breaks down the chaos of IVF like only he can. From pumping out samples to dodging emotional landmines, it’s raw, it’s real, and it’ll make you grateful your swimmers (probably) work.
~~~
Shortly before last Halloween I was graciously gifted an Andrew Schulz ticket. The final shows of The Life Tour included a Casino Rama stop. (Granted he also hosted two shows at Scotiabank Arena, where the Raptors play. However, while the Casino Rama dates involves a mini-road trip, it’s also an excellent opportunity to hit up the casino buffet, which I did. It was yummy.) I had no idea what to expect: I don’t listen to his podcast. I haven’t watched his Netflix show. (Schulz Saves America, a four-part diatribe in which he dissected 2020 happenings I’ve seen it since. Super strange and yet super funny. Last Week Tonight without a desk.). I was neither a fan or a hater. I know who he was and that was that. According to Deadline: “In a bold move during his last tour, he bought back his most recent special, Infamous, from a major streamer after rejecting creative notes and distributed it independently. After amassing over 20 million views on YouTube, it became one of the platform’s most-watched comedy specials, cementing Schulz as a pioneer in direct-to-fan content distribution. Prior to Schulz Saves America, Schulz also went directly to YouTube with his specials, 5:5:1 and 4:4:1.” As for Life? I was blown away. Classic “I’m walking here!” New York rudeness meets Jim Jefferies logic. This isn’t comedy bits about being a dad; rather it’s one long (epic) story about how he became a dad. It inches toward one man show, you know? This is a comedy treat. Enjoy this like it’s a yummy casino buffet.
March Highlights
Holland (Anytime / Prime Video)
In this wildly unpredictable thriller, Nicole Kidman is the meticulous Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher and homemaker whose picture-perfect life with her community pillar husband and son in tulip-filled Holland, Michigan tumbles into a twisted tale. Nancy and her friendly colleague become suspicious of a secret, only to discover nothing in their lives is what it seems.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: CELTICS CITY (ANYTIME / HBO MAX & CRAVE)
This 9-part docuseries chronicles the remarkable saga of the Boston Celtics, the NBA’s winningest and most storied franchise, from its founding as one of the league’s original teams all the way to its triumphant 2024 championship – along the way delving into the fierce rivalries, defining moments, and societal forces that have shaped the organization’s enduring legacy.
~~~

Welcome to the parquet floor. Jordan utterly dominated the NBA in the ’90s…however that was partly possible because Magic got AIDS and Len Bias died. 2 major blue chip teams (Lakers and Celtics) were instantly taken off the board. The ’90s for the Celtics was a dark period. Probably the worst decade of this storied franchise founded on June 6, 1946. However, when I talked to Boston sports writer Michael Holley he pointed out darkness only proceeds rebirth. Yeah, his book is literally called The Big Three: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and the Rebirth of the Boston Celtics. There has been darkness and there has been rebirth. And for decades through all of that…there have been the Boston Celtics. This docuseries features over 80 interviews with past and present Boston Celtics legends – Bob Cousy and Larry Bird to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and more. Oh and also? Celtics fans: Bell Biv DeVoe. There’s gonna be a legion of careless youths that’ll learn “Never trust a big butt and smile” when Bell Biv DeVoe show up.

March Highlights

Happy Face: Season 1 (Anytime / Paramount+)

Series Premiere: Happy Face is inspired by the true-life story of Melissa G. Moore; the critically acclaimed Happy Face podcast from iHeartPodcasts and Moore; and the autobiography Shattered Silence, written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook. At 15, Moore discovered that her beloved father was the prolific serial killer known as Happy Face. As an adult, she has changed her name and guarded her secret while her father has been serving life in prison.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN: SEASON 1 (ANYTIME / DISNEY+)

A blind lawyer with heightened abilities Matt Murdock fights for justice while former crime boss Wilson Fisk pursues his campaign as the mayor of New York City, causing their past identities to collide.
~~~
Series Premiere: “You loved me as a loser, but now you’re worried that I just might win. You know the way to stop me but, you don’t have the discipline. How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin. Well it’s Father’s Day and everybody’s wounded. First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin.” Leonard Cohen clearly writing about Daredevil. Hornhead has been Born Again. Praise Marvel Jesus; fear not: for it’s a TV miracle.
March Highlights
The Wheel of Time: Season 3 (Anytime / Prime Video)
Season Three’s storylines are primarily based on the fourth book of Robert Jordan’s series, The Shadow Rising. It will take viewers to many new regions and cities across the fictional continent of the Westlands, including the vast deserts of the Aiel Waste, the intoxicating and dangerous port city of Tanchico, and the forbidden and fog-shrouded ancient city of Rhuidean, where Rand and Moiraine will both experience life-changing revelations. Meanwhile on the other side of the world, in Rand’s small hometown of Two Rivers, his lifelong friend Perrin Aybara will also embark on a personal journey, one which will change him forever.
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: THE ELECTRIC STATE (ANYTIME / NETFLIX)
Set in a retro-futuristic past, this blockbuster adventure from filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo follows Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), an orphaned teenager who traverses the American West in search of her younger brother. Joining her on the journey is a sweet but mysterious robot and an eccentric drifter (Chris Pratt).
~~~

Whatsherface from Stranger Things and Whatshisface from Guardians of the Galaxy go on a spring road trip. The Electric State by Simon Stålenhag is a 2018 dystopian science fiction graphic novel and it is stunning. Highly Recommended Reading. Go slow. Linger on every page. The graphic novel’s premise is: “A teen girl and her robot embark on a cross-country mission to the west coast of the United States in search of her long-lost brother.” It’s set in an alternate technologically ravaged 1990s following a catastrophic war between humans and robots . (Exploring an alternate universe is my jam.) From what has been released so far: The Russo Bros. seem to have done a solid job capturing many of the breathtaking visuals. Millie Bobby Brown is a concern, not sure she has the emotional depths to pull this off. There’s a lingering intimacy to The Electric State…as a graphic novel. It’s the feeling of a large wide shot to show the isolation and loneliness of a movie character, you know? It’s a big world with big robots and that can make the characters feel small. And by intimacy it’s closer to the novel I Am Legend, rather than the Will Smith Blockbuster. Netflix has said the plot is: “The Electric State tells the story of Michelle (Brown), a young woman with a sweet but mysterious robot. The pair reluctantly team up with eccentric drifter Keats (Pratt), and set out on a cross-country road trip to find Michelle’s younger brother. Along the way, they have to navigate an electrified, retro-futuristic US landscape.” That…doesn’t sound as compelling. We’ll see what they crank out.

March Highlights

Long Bright River: Limited Series (Peacock & Crave)

Limited Series Premiere: The limited series is a suspense thriller that tells the story of Mickey (Amanda Seyfried), a police officer who patrols a Philadelphia neighbourhood hard-hit by the opioid crisis. When a series of murders begins, Mickey realizes that her personal history might be related to the case. This is based on the #1 New York Times bestselling novel by author, executive producer, and writer Liz Moore. Never read it. (Or even heard about it.) “Over the past several days, three females have been found dead,” a voiceover is heard in the trailer. “There’s a killer on the loose, Mickey. I’m worried about you.” Mickey is of course Amanda Seyfried. A killer on the loose, a cop who is too close to the case…I like all those things. I’ll go down this Long Bright River.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: DAVID BLAINE: DO NOT ATTEMPT (ANYTIME / HULU & DISNEY+)

This six-part series follows world-renowned magician and endurance artist David Blaine exploring the world through the lens of magic. David Blaine takes us on a fascinating cultural exchange and a jaw-dropping journey through extraordinary cultures, where he meets with performers and masters – kindred spirits who inspire and share with him exceptional skills (and secrets) – in Brazil, Southeast Asia, India, the Arctic Circle, South Africa and Japan.
~~~
It’s David Blaine. That’s the entire hook. Yes, he’s weird. And yes he’s creepy. But that’s what you pay David Blaine for. And he’s exploring magic all over the world. It’s magic. And it’s David Blaine. I’m 100% IN.
March Highlights
Douglas is Cancelled: Limited Series (Anytime / Britbox)
Limited Series Premiere: In the limited series, journalist Douglas Bellowes’ life implodes after a tweet about him allegedly making a sexist joke goes viral – in this provocative comedy-drama from acclaimed writer Steven Moffat. With the help of editor Toby, wife Sheila and agent Bentley, Douglas tries to save his career. Is he truly guilty – or a victim of cancel culture? And exactly how is co-host Madeline caught up in it all?
~~
SAMMY SUGGESTION: THE STUDIO: SEASON 1 (ANYTIME / APPLE TV+)
In The Studio, Seth Rogen stars as the newly appointed head of a movie studio, Continental Studios. Desperate for the approval of celebrities, he and his team of executives at Continental Studios must juggle corporate demands with creative ambitions as they try to keep movies alive and relevant.
~~~

Series Premiere: I highlight this line from The Studio’s synopsis: “As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt and his core team of infighting executives battle their own insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films.” That’s it right there…you can be popular or you can be relevant: it’s so hard to be both. And popularity is easy. Fools sitting in the front of their car get views on TikTok. (However, views doesn’t mean they’re good, thankfully so.) Speaking to Esquire about his role as Matty Remick, Seth explained: “It’s a very funny role to me. Seeing the panic and the joy and the pride that comes with success, and the risk mitigation. How much they love visiting the set, and the tragedy of the fact that nobody wants them around—that’s inherently very funny.” The funny thing is (not in a haha sorta way, though) is Rogen’s 2014 movie The Interview resulted in The Sony Hack. And like it or not all those contracts and shadowy business practices were revealed in the light. The Sony Hack was illuminating and confirmed its show business. And with The Studio Rogen is back not with a Sony Hack but with the same hard fought lesson: it is show and business. And this is how The Studio does business.

March Highlights

Twitter: Breaking the Bird (Anytime / HBO Max)

The four-part series follows the insider story behind the meteoric rise and eventual sale of the revolutionary app featuring the voices of the founders themselves. In 2006, a group of tech dreamers created the earth-shattering social media app, Twitter. In just a few years it transformed the way the world communicated. Twitter was adopted by celebrities, politicians and the everyday masses as a source for news, entertainment and community. Through firsthand accounts from some of its original founders and early employees, this is the inside story of Twitter’s inception, explosive growth across the world, and the dark underbelly of online hate and harassment that emerged.
~~

SAMMY SUGGESTION: MOBLAND: SEASON 1 (ANYTIME / PARAMOUNT+)

Power is up for grabs as the Harrigans and Stevensons, two warring London crime families, clash in a kill-or-be-killed battle that threatens to topple empires and ruin lives. Caught in the crossfire is Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), the street-smart ‘fixer’ as dangerous as he is handsome, who knows too well where loyalties lie when opposing forces collide. As kingdom goes up against kingdom, lines will be crossed — and the only saving grace is a bet-your-life guarantee: family above everything.
~~~
Series Premiere: Guy Ritchie doing a London-set organized crime series with Pierce Brosnan as the head of a crime family who is battling with a rival for control of a global syndicate. And it all stars Helen Mirren and Tom Hardy. Works for me. I hear MobLand is lovely this time of year.
