My Summer Lair Chapter #57: Did You Hear The One About Jesse David Fox A Writer/Journalist Living In Brooklyn, New York??
Jesse’s been working at Vulture (a pop culture website run by New York magazine) since 2012 where’s he now a Senior Editor primarily writing comedy and involved in programming Vulture Festival: twice a year once in NYC and once in LA; it’s like a pop culture comic book convention style convention.
Dude’s like a professor of comedy…in our spirited conversation listen to how many times he says: I Think. I’m automatically in when somebody frequently employees that phrase. When it comes to comedy this guy gets it. His writing is powerfully contrary to much of the online writing we’re subjected too: clear, sober, armed with a refreshingly distinct perceptive: no different from an excellent stand up comedy special.
So far…my 2017’s Gold Standard of Comedy Specials: Jerrod Carmichael’s 8, Chris Gethard: Career Suicide and Neal Brennan’s 3 Mics were impressively stylish and wildly funny with mucho insights and lotta heart.
In the the more traditional style of stand up comedy specials Chappelle’s Age of Spin and Roy Wood Jr.’s Father Figure stand out. And Chris Rock is supposed to drop a special on Netflix soon-ish? Maybe 2018.
Anyways Jesse created and hosts Good One: A Podcast About Jokes a podcast about – well – jokes, and the people who tell them. Guests have included Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr whole buncha names you know them all and when I hung out with him he was recording a Good One episode with Roy Wood Jr.
Yup this expansive My Summer Lair conversation started from stand up comedy and goes all the way to The Simpsons. Way too much fun; so happy I put on pants.
Oh and the Simpsons joke Jesse references:
