My Summer Lair Chapter #23: After What Is Your Favourite Star Wars Sound?
For all the Summer blockbusters we’ve eagerly consumed Star Wars remains the most sonically rich.
Sound designer Ben Burtt literally articulated George Lucas’ space opera vision in such a memorable way that I’m astounded modern movies haven’t built on that work. (Marvel movies for example…the sounds are a bit weak…although I enjoy that magnetic “shick-sound” when Captain America’s shield magnetizes on his back).
The lightsabers, Chewie’s bray, Vader’s laboured breathing…R2-D2’s beeps and whistles…you know these sounds intimately…you’ve probably even imitated them with mixed success.
Actor and impressionist Charles Ross collected all these of classic Stars Wars sounds for his one man performance of the Star Wars Trilogy.
Yes…all 3 Star Wars movies are acted out, sounded out, battled out…the entire new hope eloquently and single-handedly performed…I can’t even imagine the energy this play requires.
My phone interview with Charles opens with me asking R2 about The Force Awakens. I figure Charles has been asked enough about the new movie…why not ask a Star Wars veteran. So cool!
Fun Fact: One Man Star Wars Trilogy is performed with permission of Lucasfilm Ltd: the Flannel One approves.
One-Man Star Wars Trilogy brings the force to Toronto April 28 through May 1, 2016. For more details and tickets visit the website.
