The trailer for Under the Influence opens with remarkable self-awareness for an ancient celebrity: “I know who I am…but I realize people think Kith Richards is smoking a joint, bottle in his hand, cursing the fact that the liquor store’s closed.” That observation launches into that trademark phlegmy laugh slash cough seniors who are avid smokers possess.
To be that famous and that self-aware is impressive; I wonder what other insights this Netflix doc will offer:
I dunno how you document a life like Keith Richards…rock n roll, Altamont, Cocksucker Blues…celebrity is about singularity. That’s all the room people have for a celebrity: one defining (and marketable) characteristic. I guess for Keith it is still that rock n roll rebel…Keith for truth is one of those chaps who can go out singing My Way and truly mean it.
Airs on Netflix starting today…their 16th documentary.
Directed by Morgan Neville…dude who directed 20 Feet from Stardom (excellent doc, get on that if you haven’t seen it), as well as Search and Destroy: Iggy & The Stooges’ Raw Power, The Cool School and Johnny Cash’s America.
