We’re entering a strange and unmapped area of hip hop: it’s existed long enough that it is time to look back and recognize—like tracks in the snow—just how far we’ve traversed.
Jay-Z and Q-Tp are 45 years old, two years older than Eminem. Dre is 50. It’s awfully hard for any of hip hop’s elder statesmen to convincingly rap about the mean streets. These are the breaks.
Tupac, Biggie, Jam Master Jay and J Dilla are dead. That ain’t no joke.
Hip hop is slowly deeply maturing while still struggling with its most prominent contradiction the street vs the boardroom. Like your past you can only make peace with contradictions.

The trailer for Under the Influence opens with remarkable self-awareness for an ancient celebrity: “I know who I am…but I realize people think Kith Richards is smoking a joint, bottle in his hand, cursing the fact that the liquor store’s closed.” That observation launches into that trademark phlegmy laugh slash cough seniors who are avid smokers possess.

I can only write about Amy Winehouse with a heavy heart. She had it…man she had it. It was all there in the music.
Alas it was not meant to be: on July 23rd 2011 Amy died of alcohol poisoning; leaving this life and becoming a celebrated member of the 27 Club.
Today is the Canadian Premiere of I Am What I Play at the Royal Cinema as part of CMW. Having recently launched Girth Radio I’m keen to check this doc out: often when you mine the past you uncover the future.
