Is this good?
Will this be good?
Every movie trailer answers or challenges those 2 questions. The ham-fisted rebuttal comes swiftly however: no you don’t need to always see a movie to know it’s tank.
Do you really need to sit through a Michael Bay Transformers movie to know for sure? Tank is Tank. And Fresh…well Fresh is always Fresh. I’m down like I’m brown for that.
For the week of January 3-9 2021 I cover:
Shadow in the Cloud
Outside the Wire
Space Sweepers
Soros
Malcolm & Marie
Shall we begin?
Shadow in the Cloud (January 1, 2021)
Shadow in the Cloud is like Transporter meets Twilight Zone’s Nightmare at 20,000 Feet (both have better actors).
But oof! selling Chloë Grace Moretz as handle her business gal: come on man. Let’s be real. I can’t buy that or buy into that.
Sammy Verdict: I’d hit this on Netflix. No money.
Outside the Wire (January 15, 2021)
With Outside the Wire Anthony Mackie is basically recycling Universal Soldier (which for its time was a modern retelling of The Six Million Dollar Man.).
We’ve seen all of this before. Outside of Avengers and Black Mirror Mackie’s sci-fi contributions are turning out uneven. (The Adjustment Bureau, IO, Manchurian Candidate, Real Steel…Eagle Eye. Not a lot of winners yeah?)
Sammy Verdict: That it’s on Netflix means I’ll just FF to the ruckus and skip the plot.
Space Sweepers (February 5, 2021)
Space Sweepers is another international Netflix production: s’a Korean space opera film. I’m often up for those! Decent sci-fi ruckus: with Will Smith I, Robot-ness.
“The plot follows the crew of a space junk collector ship called The Victory. But their lives take a huge turn when they discover a humanoid child robot named Dorothy that’s known to be a weapon of mass destruction.”
Sammy Verdict: Not bad…I’ll give this 15-20 minutes. See how it be.
Soros (November 20, 2020)
A documentary about George Soros. I don’t know much about Soros: I refuse to click on anything on Twitter related to his name: I don’t trust the source and I certainly do not trust their agenda.
A documentary like this is a good critical thinking starting point: “Famous for betting against the Bank of England in 1992 and making a billion dollars in one day, he is maligned by ideologues on both the left and the right for daring to tackle the world’s problems and putting his money behind his fight – from free elections and freedom of the press to civil rights for minorities.”
“Choose your enemies carefully ’cause they will define you
Make them interesting ’cause in some ways they will mind you.”
Indeed.
Sammy Verdict: I’d be up for deeper understanding on how (not why) Soros got maligned. I wanna know that template.
Malcolm & Marie (October 2, 2019)
Malcolm & Marie is pretentious to the point of arrogance. It’s My Dinner with Andre in black & white.
Zendaya is brutally overrated and following Tenet John David Washington has potential but he’s squandering it here.
This looks like a self-indulgent lockdown movie. Come on man: a Rub & Tug Appointment is not considered a date.
Sammy Verdict: 100% Out. I’ll Never Watch This.
