My Summer Lair Chapter #16: HowWhat Does Meaning Mean To You?
Many moons ago I performed my poetry at the University of Michigan…including one piece about a can of Coke. Least I thought the untitled piece was about a can of Coke…later that evening I was approached
by a spectator who totally connected with the Coke piece…he explain how it was about life and life is sweet like Coke but limited…like in a can of Coke…and there are no refills and once the Coke is all consumed…that’s death.
None of that is in the poem! Rather than crush him I nodded…you got it! Really? Yes! Most people don’t; way to go. He walked away smiling.
Using Found Text Artist Liz Knox is (according to her gallery blurb): “observing ways we construct both meaning and the meaningful.” And she is doing that using 2 dynamic methods at the Katharine Mulherin Gallery.
The first is a video pitting fan interpretations of Nirvana’s Something in the Way…as the song plays what does it mean? Everybody has an answer! Heh…
Her other exploration is equally contemporary and rooted in popular culture…her Synopsis Series reframes user generated parental advisories from IMDB movies…amazing! Synopsis touches on The Lovers, THX 1138, Bringing Up Baby, How to Steal a Million Dollars and my favourite Guys and Dolls.
Warm and bright Liz’s strength as an Artist is her sense of play…which is on display. Oh! That rhymed. I’m a poet and I know it!!
