Today! Creature Commandos (streaming on HBO Max) concludes.
It’s the first project under James Gunn for the revamped DC Studios.
So…how was the first season?
More Creature Comforts (same old DC Studios) or Going Commando (the new DC is free and fun)?
I’ve never bothered or invested in the MCU’s What If… animation. (The third and final season streamed on December 22nd. Smell Ya Later.)
However, I can happily do Creature Commandos fresh from DC Studios. (On December 23 it was renewed for a second season.)
Though this is a mostly strange introduction to the new DC Studios regime. Matt Reeves’ Batman is utter junk and more importantly it’s Elseworlds. It doesn’t count and therefore doesn’t have any value: so in your fat face Penguin. And Superman doesn’t fly until July 2025.
So for now it’s all Hello My Name Is: “Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails…they’re your last, worst option.”
James Gunn introduced us to Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
Apparently the humans will appear as themselves in real life movies. They’re…cast, cast. Is that true?
Thus begins the new DC era under James Gunn and friends.
Up next for James Gunn and DC Studios is Superman (July 11, 2025) and Peacemaker: Season 2 (2025). I’m 100% IN for both.
While next door: the third and final season of the Marvel animated series What If… ended with an Agatha Harkness musical episode. Ugh: that sounds brutally awful. I’ve not watched a single episode. What If… Eh. And that alone doesn’t sell me.
That was the MCU’s first animated series and the first series produced by Marvel Studios Animation.
Looking ahead for Marvel Studios Animation: Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man arrives on January 29, 2025 on Disney+.
Eyes of Wakanda is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on August 6, 2025 and Marvel Zombies is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on October 3, 2025. Any animated interest in those upcoming TV shows?
