Girth Radio Presents…
Want to feel old? TLC’s Scrubs came out in early 1999. The song is just over 15 years old. Ouch. But it’s message is true then as it is now:
“A scrub is a guy that thinks he’s fly
And is also known as a buster
Always talkin’ about what he wants
And just sits on his broke ass
A scrub is a guy that cant get no love from me…”
You go girl! A powerful female anthem until Bastille covered it transforming the song into…I dunno what. Their version is playful and yet there’s an element of threat to it: something sinister lurks below the surface. I guess I’m not alone…either the band or some benevolent online nerd slightly remixed Bastille’s cover with movie dialogue:
“A boy’s best friend is his mother.”
You’re crazy if you don’t recognize that line. More than crazy I’d say you’re…Psycho! Yes dialogue from Hitchcock’s cinematic masterpiece are weaved into Bastille’s Scrubs cover. Sinister is subtly no more.
It actually makes sense: Norman Bates is the ultimate scrub:
