#SetTheVCR: May 3-9, 2020

Girth Radio Presents…

It’s early May. While this year we were unable to celebrate Free Comic Book (single tear!) as nerds and good humans we can still celebrate Star Wars Day. I guess people who dig Star Trek still observe this day by going out for Chinese food?

Sunday, May 3
Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children: Episode 5 (final episode) (7:45 p.m. / HBO)
The Simpsons (8 p.m. / Fox)
Harley Quinn: Season 1 (11 p.m. / Syfy)

Sammy Suggestion: The Last Dance (9 p.m. & 10 p.m. / ESPN)
The Last Dance rolls on with Episodes 5 and 6. Really enjoying this docu-series. It’s been hard to convey just how special 1990s NBA was and is. I’ll be so sad when it’s all over on May 17. Thankfully until then, we can enjoy ourselves.

Monday, May 4
American Experience: George W. Bush Part 1 (9 p.m. / PBS)
Creepshow: Season 1 (9 p.m. / AMC)

Sammy Suggestion: Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian (Anytime / Disney Plus)
Earlier this year many people were shocked to learn Disney Plus’ breakthrough hit The Mandalorian was shot entirely indoors. Even when they were “outside.” So to understand how all this Industrial Light and Magic happened Disney Plus is offering us this weekly 8 episode docu-series. “We had a great experience making the show and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you,” says executive producer Jon Favreau. He’ll be your “Happy” host taking you on a tour of this world with interviews, models and effects and creatures (always with the creatures) and leading roundtable conversations (hopefully those are compelling. They can sometimes veer into pretentiousness.) (Also The Mandalorian’s second season was expected to be released in October however that seems likely due to current circumstances so enjoy this show sloooowly.)

Tuesday, May 5
American Experience: George W. Bush Part 2 (9 p.m. / PBS)
Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind (9 p.m. / HBO)

Sammy Suggestion: Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours to Kill (Anytime / Netflix)
Until audiences let go of fear and panic to return to shows comedy as a medium and a platform will suffer greatly. A band can easily perform online comedy needs audiences. Enjoy these humourous specials until we run out. Also if you haven’t yet do check out Jerry Before Seinfeld also on Netflix a fantastic documentary about nothing.

Wednesday, May 6
Sammy Suggestion: Becoming (Anytime / Netflix)
Becoming is the Obamas’ latest Netflix offering following American Factory and Crip Camp. The title based on Michelle Obama’s memoir follows her through a 34-city tour. It’s understandable when your husband is the President of the United States of America that you don’t always get spotlight time. As she embarks on her post-Presidential work this’ll focus on Michelle’s life during this unique transition period. She’s…Becoming. (I know…when I saw Becoming and Netflix I instantly got excited thinking this was gonna be like a werewolf movie…He’s Becoming!!! but ah…I guess this is still good too.)

Thursday, May 7
Sammy Suggestion: Z (Anytime / Shudder)
Shudder’s original offerings are often notable and this one Z seems worthy of plugging in your G.I. Joe nightlight to keep the nightmares at bay. “A couple is shaken to the core when their eight-year-old son begins hanging out with a creepy and ominous imaginary friend.” Yo. It’s been a while since we’ve had a solid imaginary friend movie. (Have we ever had a solid imaginary friend movie?! Comments are below.)

Friday, May 8
Dead To Me: Season 2 (Anytime / Netflix)
Jimmy O. Yang: Good Deal (Anytime / Amazon Prime Video)

Sammy Suggestion: Spaceship Earth (Anytime / Hulu)
Oh I so wanna see this. Every now and then we’ll run into a documentary and go: how do people live like this? None of us fully appreciate or grasp just what’s out there and how not everyone lives and works the “exact” same way. “Spaceship Earth is the true, stranger-than-fiction, adventure of eight visionaries who in 1991 spent two years quarantined inside of a self-engineered replica of Earth’s ecosystem called BIOSPHERE 2.” Was this science or science fiction? Only one way to find out.

Saturday, May 9
Sammy Suggestion: Into The Night (Anytime / Netflix)
As I wrap up Amazon Prime’s Tales from the Loop (why are you not watching this sci-fi tv show! It is so not gonna get renewed for Season 2. Thanks for nothing nerds!!) Into The Night is my new sci-fi series. It is outstanding and highly recommended. People are on the run…from the sun. Yo!! Human-Vampires?! What’s happening? It’s Netflix’s first Belgian original series (based on the Polish science fiction novel The Old Axolotl by Jacek Dukaj). I don’t have any references for any of those things. Into The Night (terrible title…hope that’s just a poor translation) came out on Netflix on May 1st. 6 episodes 35 minutes each. Excellent short and sweet weekend viewing. On The Run…From The Sun! Yo.
