Girth Radio Presents…
“We live in a revolutionary moment. The disastrous economic and political experiment that attempted to organize human behavior around the dictates of the global marketplace has failed. The promised prosperity that was to have raised the living standards of works through trickle-down economics has been exposed as lie.”
Chris Hedges is in documentary! The opening quote is from his excellent 2015 book Wages of Rebellion. Wages “investigates what social and psychological factors cause revolution and resistance.” So good, that’s your homework if you haven’t read it.
But this isn’t a book review so much as it’s a Trailer Alert for All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception, and the Spirit of I.F. Stone currently screening at TIFF 2016:
“Vancouver-based filmmaker and TV news veteran Fred Peabody explores the life and legacy of the maverick American journalist I.F. Stone, whose long one-man crusade against government deception lives on in the work of such contemporary filmmakers and journalists as Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald, David Corn, and Matt Taibbi.”
Although it’s strange how the trailer ends with journalists lie…that mighta been true pre-internet but these days “journalists” are lazy not liars.
In the rush to beat twitter they’re not doing research, confirming facts, addressing discrepancies, detailing the big picture…where’s the value? Many “journalists” are uselessly exchanging hits for integrity. (We saw that awful exchange through the coverage of jian ghomeshi and bill cosby…some of that coverage was written and created in a way to help or even encourage women who have endured awful experiences yet neither at the end of the articles or even at the beginning were 1-800 numbers, website resources or even an open call for donations. So do you want to help women or do you want to help your metrics?)
Remember in high school English nobody read the assigned books…they just watched the movie? Same thing…I don’t consume the news anymore…I just wait for the documentary.
