New Book Alert: August 3-7, 2020

Posted on August 8, 2020August 14, 2023 By Sammy Younan

My weekly collection of new and notable books for your pop culture pleasure and edification: #ReadMoreTweetLess.

A Star Is Bored: A Novel by Byron Lane (Henry Holt and Co.; Fiction on sale July 28, 2020): A novel about a Hollywood assistant from a Hollywood assistant. Inspired by his time with Carrie Fisher this is Byron Lane’s novel A Star Is Bored. Expect “rebellious” and witty Postcards from the Edge. #NewBookAlert for August 3, 2020.

Blown away! #AStarIsBored is named a best book of summer by People Magazine! “Funny, dishy, and deeply affectionate… the force is with him.” OMG ❤️ thanks @people @HenryHolt @BookSparks In bookstores 7/28 or preorder now (support indie bookstores via https://t.co/1X6aLF2Dcg) pic.twitter.com/Gnw8q8XAL2

The Living Dead: A Novel by George A. Romero & Daniel Kraus (Tor Books; Fiction on sale August 4, 2020): George A. Romero died in 2017 yet he’s back in 2020 with a zombie novel? Only for him does that make sense. Welcome to The Living Dead, a novel that charts the rise of the zombies and the fall of humanity. Currently roaming the earth via Tor Books with a finishing assist and “brainsssss” from Daniel Kraus. #NewBookAlert for August 4, 2020.

Live Free Or Die: America (and the World) on the Brink by Sean Hannity (Threshold Editions (Simon & Schuster); Fiction? on sale August 4, 2020): Often the extreme condescension to President Trump and his ilk fails to align with reality. For example: they keep issuing books for the base to read. The latest is Sean Hannity’s Live Free Or Die out now from Simon & Schuster. Still: long as people are reading books, we good. It’s a start: like food, not everyone will make good choices…junk food is appealing. #NewBookAlert for August 5, 2020.

The Cult of Smart: How Our Broken Education System Perpetuates Social Injustice by Fredrik deBoer (All Points Books (Macmillan Publishers); Non-Fiction on sale August 4, 2020): “Since cognitive talent varies from person to person, our education system can never create equal opportunity for all.” Yeah: some kids are dumb kids; some kids are smart kids. Kids are not interchangeable lego blocks. So why do we treat them like blocks? We’re the blockheads. The Cult of Smart by Fredrik deBoer a talented writer is out now just in time for the latest school year. (I appreciate how calm and rationally Fredrik speaks in podcasts and interviews for this book. Google some of em; it’s informative.) #NewBookAlert for August 6, 2020.

The Hollow Ones by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan (Grand Central Publishing; Novel on sale August 4, 2020): Who is Hugo Blackwood? Following The Strain Trilogy Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan return with The Hollow Ones: horror and suspense and well I said del Toro didn’t I? #NewBookAlert for August 7, 2020.

"Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan have yet another twisted masterpiece on their hands. An enduring new series combining horror, suspense, and fable."―@StephenChbosky on THE HOLLOW ONES (@RealGDT, @ChuckHogan)
