My Summer Lair Chapter #245: How Often Are You Panning For Gold?
This My Summer Lair episode has a lot happening. Welcome to the Wild Wild West: with moi and stand-up comic Chris Robinson.
What results is an engaging conversation that spans a variety of pop culture topics. It starts with an eerie fog that kept many coin laundry patrons at home and soon becomes a discussion of iconic westerns like Tombstone and classic cowboys such as Clint Eastwood.
And it all kicks off with The Big Apple, a literally big apple on Hwy 401 to fresh kicks like Jordans to Dane Cook. Like at one point I even refer to Tony Hawk as the Jackie Chan of skateboarding.
Truly, this conversation with comic Chris Robinson covers a lot of material.
So does his comedy special Panning for Gold which you can stream on Crave.
I asked Chris about growing up and being Jehovah’s Witness…how does that square with being and going into entertainment? And he shared—rather openly—the steps he took to make his stand up comedy dreams happen. At one point he was alienated from his family.
Chris reflects on the essential role of comedy in bringing joy to others, while also acknowledging the underlying pain often present in the art form.
That’s gotta be hard…the whole point of stand up comedy is to make people feel better. To make em laugh. But as always with comedy, pain is present. Be grateful to the people who support your dreams.
As we wrapped up Chris said this…meaning the conversation you’re about to hear…this was sick. I’m thankful he filled out the comment card with that positive comment and for his willingness to go down dark and strange emotional roads with me considering this is supposed to be a disposable interview for a comedy album.
His comedy special Panning for Gold is now streaming on Crave.
